FPC & FFC Flex Circuit / Flat Cable Sourcing in China

Compare China FPC (flexible printed circuit) and FFC (flexible flat cable) suppliers by PI stackup, layer count, pitch, bend radius, coverlay, stiffener, surface finish, length, ZIF/connector-ready ends, impedance claims, MOQ, NRE, samples and drawings — buyer-side RFQ fields for bare flex and FFC jumpers, not rigid PCBA, round cables, membrane switches or factory marketing.

Buyer context

Make the technical and commercial basis comparable first.

FPC and FFC quotations often look similar until product form (etched PI flex vs laminated FFC jumper), layer/pitch count, stackup and finished thickness, static vs dynamic bend, coverlay and stiffener, surface finish, length and connector-ready ends, impedance claims, and MOQ/NRE layers are written down. Sephalis helps buyers make those fields explicit so supplier quotations stay comparable, and keeps supplier statements separate from impedance verification, IPC class approval or market-access certification. Sephalis does not manufacture FPC or FFC and does not certify bend life, impedance, ENIG thickness or IPC-6013 conformance. Use this page for bare flexible printed circuits and flexible flat cable jumpers (including connector-ready FFC/ZIF tails when the RFQ is the flex/FFC part); for rigid FR-4 bare board or PCBA from Gerber+BOM use /electronics-sourcing-china/pcb-assembly; for point-to-point jacketed round cables use /electronics-sourcing-china/cable-assemblies; for branched harnesses use /electronics-sourcing-china/wire-harnesses; for discrete connector housings/pins alone use /electronics-sourcing-china/connectors-terminals; for PET/PC membrane keypad overlays (even with an FPC tail as an HMI field) use /electronics-sourcing-china/membrane-switches; for embedded LCD/TFT modules (FPC as interconnect field only) use /electronics-sourcing-china/lcd-tft-modules; for category-level PCB/PCBA scope use /electronics-sourcing-china/pcb-pcba-electronics.

What buyers usually need to compare

Use these fields to keep quotations tied to the same technical, production and packaging assumptions.

Product form — FPC (etched PI flex circuit) vs FFC (laminated parallel-conductor flat cable); single-/double-/multilayer for FPC; exclude rigid FR-4 PCBA and rigid-flex hybrids unless buyer explicitly scopes a future separate brief

Engineering package — Gerber/ODB++/fab drawing + revision for FPC; dimensional drawing or sample + pitch/pin map for FFC; file completeness called out

Stackup / materials — PI thickness, Cu weight and ED vs RA copper, adhesive vs adhesiveless, coverlay thickness, finished free-bend thickness target

Pitch / conductor or layer count — FFC pitch and pin count; FPC layer count and critical trace/space if buyer-specified

Bend requirement — static vs dynamic; min bend radius; bend direction/angle; cycle count if dynamic; bend-zone keepouts (vias and stiffener edges out of active bend)

Coverlay openings and outline tolerance

Stiffener — material (FR-4 / PI / Al / SS), thickness, locations, adhesive; none in active bend zone unless designed

Surface finish / plating — ENIG, OSP, immersion Ag/Sn, hard-gold fingers or FFC contact plating — as RFQ claim fields, not Sephalis guarantees

Length and overall outline (FFC length tolerance; FPC outline dimensions)

Connector-ready ends — ZIF/LIF mating P/N or datasheet; contact side; pitch; exposed pad length; reinforced tail thickness matching connector datasheet; discrete connectors alone belong on connectors-terminals

Impedance / controlled-impedance request if any (target Ω, tolerance, layer, reference) — RFQ field; verification method (TDR/coupon) as supplier claim until evidenced

Electrical / dimensional test scope (continuity, open-short, FAI dimensions) and what is included in unit price vs NRE

Prototype / pilot / production quantities; sample cost and sample lead time; production lead time and quantity breakpoints

MOQ, NRE (laser coverlay, stiffener tools, fixtures), packaging/labeling, and documents to request with the quotation (stackup note, COC, RoHS/REACH claims, IPC-6013 class if buyer-named — not Sephalis certification)

Evidence worth collecting before the next decision

Sephalis keeps supplier statements, technical evidence and unresolved questions separate so the buyer can see what is known and what still needs engineering or specialist review.

Buyer Gerber/ODB++/fab drawing package with revision (FPC) or dimensional drawing / sample (FFC) — buyer-verified once revision locked

Written stackup / construction note matching the RFQ (PI, Cu, coverlay, finished thickness) — commercial / agreed basis

Bend note (static vs dynamic, radius, cycle count, bend-zone keepouts) on drawing or quotation — buyer-verified once agreed

Stiffener drawing or callout (material, thickness, locations) — buyer-verified / supplier-provided

Supplier statement on surface finish / plating and any impedance target — supplier claim

Connector datasheet or mating P/N for ZIF/FFC ends when connector-ready — buyer-verified once agreed

Written sample / first-article terms and production lead time — commercial

Quotation with MOQ, NRE, exclusions and unit-price basis — commercial

Supplier-provided COC / test notes / impedance or IPC-class claims where offered — supplier claim / document (not Sephalis certification or engineering sign-off); unresolved items called out as unknown (report-to-drawing match, TDR method vs claimed Ω, bend-cycle evidence, ENIG thickness evidence, rigid-flex scope creep)

Commercial comparison

Separate one-time development cost from recurring unit cost.

For electronics, tooling, NRE, programming, test fixtures, artwork and prototype charges may sit outside the production unit price. A useful comparison keeps those charges visible together with MOQ, lead time, packaging and FOB terms.

Technical boundary

Supplier documents are evidence, not automatic approval.

Sephalis can collect specifications, quotations, supplier documents and samples. Formal electrical safety, radio, battery transport, engineering validation, product compliance and market-access decisions remain separate questions for the relevant specialists and authorities.

Common buyer questions

Short answers below describe the sourcing workflow rather than engineering or regulatory approval.

When should I use fpc-ffc vs pcb-assembly, cable-assemblies, connectors-terminals, membrane-switches or the PCB hub?

Use /electronics-sourcing-china/fpc-ffc for bare flexible printed circuits (FPC) and flexible flat cable (FFC) jumpers — PI stackup, pitch, bend, coverlay, stiffener, plating, length and connector-ready ends when part of the FFC/FPC RFQ. Use /electronics-sourcing-china/pcb-assembly for rigid FR-4 bare board or PCBA from Gerber+BOM. Use /electronics-sourcing-china/cable-assemblies for point-to-point jacketed round/custom wire cables. Use /electronics-sourcing-china/wire-harnesses for branched harnesses. Use /electronics-sourcing-china/connectors-terminals for discrete housings/pins alone (not a finished FFC). Use /electronics-sourcing-china/membrane-switches for PET/PC membrane keypad overlays (FPC tail on a membrane stays on that page unless the RFQ is bare flex alone). Use /electronics-sourcing-china/lcd-tft-modules when the deliverable is an LCD/TFT module (FPC as interconnect field only). Use /electronics-sourcing-china/pcb-pcba-electronics for category-level PCB/PCBA scope before opening a leaf. Keep each RFQ on the matching page so suppliers quote the same product scope.

What is the difference between FPC and FFC on this page?

FFC is a laminated parallel-conductor flat cable (pitch, pin count, length, stiffener, contact side). FPC is an etched copper circuit on polyimide that can include custom routing, multiple layers, coverlay openings and local stiffeners. Put the product form in the RFQ first; mixing FPC and FFC assumptions on one line item makes quotations incomparable.

Does Sephalis manufacture or certify FPC / FFC, impedance or IPC flex class?

No. Sephalis is a buyer-side sourcing and supplier-research service. It helps compare manufacturers and collect drawings, stackups, quotations, samples and supplier documents. Manufacturing capability claims, bend-life marketing, impedance reports, ENIG thickness and any IPC-6013 / certificate statements remain with the supplier; formal engineering validation or market-access approval stays with the relevant specialists.

How should bend radius, coverlay and stiffener appear in the RFQ?

State static versus dynamic use, minimum installed bend radius, bend direction, and cycle count if dynamic; call out coverlay openings and stiffener material/thickness/locations; keep vias and stiffener edges out of the active bend zone unless the design intentionally places them. Photos alone are not enough for a comparable flex quote.

How should impedance and surface-finish claims be used?

If controlled impedance is required, put target ohms, tolerance, layer and reference plane in the RFQ and ask which verification (TDR/coupon) is included versus NRE. Treat ENIG/OSP/gold and impedance PDFs as supplier claims/documents to collect and match to the quoted construction — not automatic SI sign-off or a Sephalis guarantee. If method or report-to-drawing match is unclear, mark that item unknown until the buyer or a specialist closes it.

How should MOQ, samples and NRE be compared on FPC / FFC?

Ask each supplier to separate sample cost, prototype MOQ, production MOQ, laser coverlay / stiffener tooling and fixtures from the recurring unit price, and to state sample versus production lead times. A headline low MOQ is not comparable until stackup complexity, connector-ready ends and NRE lines are written down.
